Excellon Resources response
Author: Excellon Resources, Published on: 4 February 2020
Excellon Resources Inc., through its 100 percent-owned subsidiary Minera Excellon de Mexico S.A. de C.V., operates the Platosa underground silver, lead and zinc mine. The mine began production in 2005 and fosters a positive relationship with its neighbours, including the Town of Bermejillo and Ejidos. We have recently signed exploration agreements with local Ejidos.
Minera Excellon is a proud member of the local community engaging with residents and supporting a wide range of community priorities, all of which contribute to a stronger and more resilient community. Members of local Ejidos are proud members of our workforce. Our presence supports many local families and businesses in the area; in 2018 we spent more than US$4.5 million procuring goods and services from local suppliers.
Minera Excellon pumps approximately 25,000 gallons per minute of water from the Platosa underground workings; pumping ensures that we can operate the mine safely and efficiently. Dewatering of underground mine workings is practiced all over the world to allow the safe production of metals and minerals. Under Mexican law, mining operations are permitted to remove water from underground workings and to discharge such water if it meets water quality standards prescribed by SEMARNAT, the Mexican federal environmental agency. Water pumped from Platosa meets Mexican agricultural water standards and does not require treatment for that purpose. We monitor this water on a regular basis to ensure it meets regulatory thresholds...
